Mia, a Korean living in Singapore, recorded a vlog of her flight, from enjoying her meals to growing anxious as turbulence hit. The video, posted to TikTok on Jan. 13, amassed over five million views at the time of writing. Many made fun of her for filming herself during the panic attack, calling it "performative". Two days later, Mia posted a clarification video explaining that she had previously been a passenger on the 2024 SQ321 flight that encountered severe turbulence. The incident left one 73-year-old British man dead and more than 100 passengers injured.

A panic attack is not random. It’s your body going into emergency mode. Even if you’re sitting safely in your room. What’s happening inside your body: Your brain thinks you’re in danger → releases stress hormones → your heart starts racing, breathing becomes fast, body goes on high alert. That’s why it feels like: – “I can’t breathe” – “Something is wrong” – “I’m losing control” But it’s not danger. It’s an overactive stress response. Anxiety is the same system… just switched on for longer. So why is this happening more today? In real life, I see patterns like: – Long gaps between meals / too much sugar & caffeine → blood sugar goes up and crashes → your body feels unstable → triggers anxiety – Poor sleep + constant screen time → your brain doesn’t fully switch off → stays in alert mode – No real pause in the day → always doing, thinking, consuming → no signal of “safety” to the body – Holding everything in → stress, emotions, pressure → your body stores it instead of processing it Over time, your system becomes extra sensitive. So one small trigger = a big reaction (panic attack) Healing is not just “calm down.” It’s helping your body feel safe again: – Eating regularly, balanced meals – Reducing excess caffeine – Sleeping better – Getting sunlight, movement – Creating small pauses in your day – Talking, expressing, not bottling everything up And if needed, taking professional help. Your body is not weak. It’s overwhelmed. Your chest tightens, your heart races, and it can feel like your body has completely lost control. An anxiety attack tends to build slowly over time. It’s racing thoughts, spiraling worries, and a constant sense of dread that makes it hard to stay present. Instead of an explosive surge of fear, the mind retreats inward trying to manage the overwhelming stream of thoughts. Both are deeply distressing experiences. Both can make a person feel powerless in their own body and mind. They just move through the nervous system in very different ways. If you’re experiencing one, grounding can help bring your body back to the present moment: 1️⃣ Run cold water or ice on your hand, this will cause you to focus on the present and cool your body down 2️⃣ Sit with your arms wrapped around you, the pressure will help trigger the vagus nerve and bring calm 3️⃣ Focus on your breath in for 4, hold for 4, breath out for 4, hold for 4.
