The sun was dipping below the horizon when Dr. Aston, a local veterinarian known more for patching up golden retrievers than forest predators, pulled his truck to the side of the mountain road. Near the edge of the dense pine forest, he had spotted a flash of spotted fur and a stubby tail.
It was a bobcat.
The animal was young, likely a yearling, and was lying dangerously still. As Aston approached with a thick moving blanket, the cat hissed—a weak, raspy sound. Its front paw was caught in a discarded piece of rusted wire fencing, and its breathing was shallow.
The Recovery Room
Back at his clinic, the atmosphere was tense. Dr. Aston worked with hushed efficiency. Under light sedation, he carefully snipped the wire away.
The Injury: Deep lacerations around the carpal joint.
The Treatment: Debridement, a series of stitches, and a heavy dose of fluids for dehydration.
