Phyllium philippinicum, or ‘Leaf Insect’, is an insect in the order of stick insects (phasmida) that looks like a leaf. In nature it can be found in tropical forests in the Philippines.
🐛 This species of leaf insect is bright green in color and has a body shaped like a leaf. This means it is really flat and broad and has brown spots at the rims of the body. The abdomen shows veins-like leaves and the legs are equipped with lobes. They are often bright green like a young leaf, but occasionally there are brown, yellow or pinkish variants of this species to be found.
The difference between males and females is huge once they are adults. The females are larger, thicker and wider than the males. The males are really small and slender.
This species of leaf insect is very quiet during the day, but becomes active during the night. When they walk they will walk in a stop-go kind of way as if they are moved by the wind. The males can fly once they become adults, and they generally will do this often when disturbed. The females cannot fly.

I just can't stop bringing this phasmid species - Extatosoma tiaratum 'Innisfail' - home with me, they keep crossing my path. Now, thanks to @britt_tulmans (REALLY big thank you! 💚) I get to give this amazing species a place in my indoor jungle for the fifth time in my phasmid breeding career ☺️.
Although they look like dried leafs, these insects are stick insects, not leaf insects! I know, it gets confusing sometimes 😅. They originate from Australia and love to eat bramble, oak and eucalyptus 🌿. Individuals can vary in color (as you can see in the video), but they don't change their appearance like a chameleon or according to seasons. So obviously I was joking, these stick insects don't know it's autumn here 😄.
