PH✨PhD interview questions✨
It’s PhD interview season! I did my first PhD interview in Jan 2020😮 I did a post a few years ago about my PhD interview questions but I’ve thrown a few more in here that other PhDs I’ve spoken to were asked! I didn’t apply to any competitive funding / external funding for my PhDs, but if you do then you will likely get asked questions about how you will find funding etc too!
When answering questions, my advice would be to try and think about why they’re asking that? What skill or experience can you demonstrate in your answer?
The obvious ones:
Why do you want to do a PhD?
Why do you want to do a PhD at this institute/ university/lab?
Why are you interested in this project?
Tell me about a paper/ area of the field that interests you.
Questions that test what kind of person you are:
How do you communicate with supervisors?
What are your career ambitions?
What is your biggest weakness
What area of science do you think is most important for society at the moment ?
What difficulties do you expect to encounter during your PhD and how will you approach these challenges ?
What do you look for in a supervisor / lab?
Skills based questions:
Describe a time when you had to troubleshoot / problem solve
What techniques / skills are you strongest at and which skills may you need more help with?
How do you organise your time ?
What do you think the field will look like in 5 years time?
How would you communicate your work to the public/ your peers ?

ANI defended my doctoral thesis yesterday.
It’s a mix of emotions, but above all, I feel content and deeply grateful. The “one day”I’ve been longing for has finally come. It hasn’t been an easy ride.
I still remember the moment I first stepped onto this campus for the first time, right in the middle of COVID peak, and now I see how far I’ve come. I’ve grown so much 🥹

SAI had a trial reel go viral over the past few days and the usual comments come up about how ‘useless’ - mainly men in stem - think humanities PhD’s are. Major. Eye. Rolls. 🙄🙄🙄
It’s so interesting to see people’s reactions - I mean where do they think ‘knowledge’ came from in the first place?
The main argument seems to be that as a historian I don’t ’save lives’.
…and I find this quite comical because if my ‘haters’ took a moment to learn about me they’d actually discover that I nearly died of Sepsis a few years back and I spent a lot of my time as a Sepsis Awareness Advocate…literally saving lives! 😉😉😉
But of course that doesn’t count cause I’m a historian and have a humanities PhD!
My subject ALSO sets a lot of people off - and that is children and jewellery and history…& that’s even more useless lol!
BUT my view on this is that - I am PRESERVING lives - by studying and showcasing the artifacts and imagery I talk about…many of which include imagery of actual historical children - I’m literally giving ‘them’ (my little gems) an eternal place in history.
And so their likenesses and stories are forever preserved.
So if you’re going a PhD and getting kickback - who cares! It just shows ‘their’ lack of intelligence…not mine or yours! 😉

PHIts nearly phd interview season (eeeek!!) and because of the way my application worked, I actually interviewed twice at Oxford so I’d say I’m pretty well versed in this area (this is part 1 of 3). I was rejected from my initial DTP application (boooo) but then my supervisor reached out directly and asked if I was still interested (obvs said yes), and then I recieved my offer that same day☺️
- why are you interested in this phd?
- what has been the hardest research you’ve carried out to date?
- summarise your proposed project in 1 minute?
- what do you think are the main pitfalls in this field?
- tell me about recent developments in this field?
- how would you share your findings with the public?
- what experience/skills do you have that you feel is relevant?
- why is this project worth funding more than others?
- what is the main hypothesis that you want to test?
- what interests you about this university?
- how will you ensure the project is completed on time?
- would you spend time looking for additional funding?
All of these questions were either asked directly to me or my peers who were interviewed before me - before my interview (which lasted about 25 mins, with 10 mins of that being a presentation by me on my previous work) - I drafted & practiced answers for every single one the day before so I wasn’t caught out. Don’t forget you can say I don’t know, and ask for clarifying questions!!

DRthe best thing you can say in a PhD interview is "I don't know, but I'm curious to find out more."
you're sitting in a room with experts. if you pretend to know something and they ask you about it, you'll flop. and that reflects badly on you.
instead, say "I'm not sure I've done that exact thing, but here's something similar I have experience with." bring in your expertise where it's relevant, but don't fake it.
PhD programs need to know you can ask for help. they're looking out for the person who will spend a month stuck on something because they're too afraid to admit they don't know.
confidence and humility. you need both.
