We hear the phrase all the time: play-based learning, play-based curriculum, play-based activities. But let’s be clear, if it’s BASED on play, it’s probably not actually play. In Playwork, we define play as behaviors that are freely chosen, personally directed, and intrinsically motivated. That means the child decides what, how, and why—without external goals or outcomes. When adults design something to “look like play” but it’s still directed, evaluated, or goal-oriented, that’s not play. That’s a playful activity. And that’s okay! There’s value in playful moments and playful learning. Just don’t call it play if it isn’t. Let’s stop calling everything “play-based” and start getting honest. Is it truly play? Or is it an adult-designed experience with playful elements? Play deserves more than a hyphen and a vague promise. We ned to protect it, name it clearly, and make space for the real thing. #childledplay #playmatters #childdevelopment #justplay #letthemplay
