PLIf your character only makes choices because the plot needs them to, the story will always feel slightly fake.
That’s the quiet mistake.
At some point in the draft, you need a scene to happen, so the character bends just enough to make it work. They trust someone they normally wouldn’t. They walk into something they would question. They agree to a move that doesn’t really line up.
It might work on paper. The scene might move. But the character starts to feel arranged instead of alive.
When you hit that moment, slow down and go back to the center of who they are.
What’s actually pushing them forward right now?
How do they respond when they feel pressure?
What would they genuinely choose next?
Build from there.
