What is Decoherence? In quantum physics, atoms can spread out like rippling water waves and create beautiful patterns. Decoherence is when an outside force disrupts this wave behavior and destroys these patterns. Decoherence is a major problem for quantum computing. At NIST, we are working to measure and reduce the effects of decoherence to improve quantum computers and other devices that get their special behavior from the rules of quantum physics. #Quantum #Physics #iyq2025 #QuantumScience #Qubits

Scientists at Berkeley Lab are rewriting the rules of computing, chemistry, materials science, and more through the promise of quantum information science. “If we can build a quantum computer with about 100 logical qubits and a fidelity of 10⁻⁷, we could deliver far more reliable results for high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and materials science, and achieve a real scientific advantage.” — Bert de Jong, Director, Quantum Systems Accelerator In this Science Power-Up episode, Bert explains how quantum computers, sensors, and networks could help tackle some of our most complex energy challenges. Working with hundreds of researchers across institutions, Berkeley Lab is pushing the limits of hardware and algorithms to help shape the future of quantum technologies. A classical search algorithm moves through a problem space step by step, checking one possible path after another. Quantum search works differently. By using superposition, a quantum system can exist in multiple states at the same time, allowing many potential paths to be explored simultaneously. Instead of sequential checking, probability amplitudes evolve together, increasing the likelihood of the correct solution emerging when the system is measured. This doesn’t mean quantum computers try every answer blindly. The advantage comes from carefully designed interference that amplifies correct paths while suppressing others. When applied correctly, this approach can outperform classical search methods for specific problem classes. What looks abstract is actually a fundamentally different way of processing information. Do you see quantum search as a niche optimization — or a shift in how computation itself works? Follow @gs.techverse.de for clear, engineering-led explanations of emerging computing technologies. Follow @evolving.qc for the latest quantum computing and physics breakthroughs Richard Feynman once admitted he disliked the Nobel Prize. Not because it was unearned, but because it missed the point. What thrilled him was the moment of discovery. The struggle of figuring something out that no one understood before. The quiet satisfaction of watching other scientists use his ideas to push further. The prize was an afterthought. The work was the reward. Progress is built by people obsessed with understanding, not applause. #quantumcomputing #quantumcomputer #quantumprocessor #quantum #qubits
