THRip currents, a very scary scenario to be in it’s important to know the advice given by @watersafetyireland
Firstly, Rip currents pull you out not under, it’s advised not to fight the current as it will exhaust you.
Steps they advise:
•Rip currents are usually narrow.
Swim parallel to the shoreline (so along the beach, not toward it)
• Once you’re out of the current, you can then swim back to shore.
Or
If you can’t swim or get out of current.
• Float and Breathe - Float on your back, head back, belly up, arms and legs out like a starfish.
• Signal for Help by waving arms

NBA string of recent drownings from rip currents at beaches filled with summer revelers has raised concerns about the potentially deadly natural phenomenon.
Last Friday, 13-year-old Jerry Hyppolite drowned in rough ocean waters off Fort Lauderdale. And a man died after he was pulled from the water in Surfside, authorities said.
NBC6's Marissa Bagg went into a rip current at Fort Lauderdale Beach to show viewers just how quickly you can be swept away.

JEAnother extremely active day for Seaside Heights & Seaside Park water rescue crews.
Despite clear skies and warm temps, a 2–4 ft swell brought strong rip currents, catching many off guard. Just as I arrived in town, SHFD responded to their second rescue of the day two victims pulled from the surf within minutes.
Throughout the afternoon, I patrolled by drone, scanning for swimmers in distress. I spotted a group being pulled out beyond the break and landed to investigate. As I approached the waterline, bystanders began yelling for help. One swimmer was caught in a rip and rapidly drifting out. I advised them to call 911, grabbed swim fins and a borrowed boogie board, and swam out to assist. I kept the victim calm until SHFD arrived via rescue jetski.
Shortly after, a second major incident occurred involving 4–5 individuals clinging to surfboards, one in significant distress. SHFD deployed the ski, conducted multiple victim rescues, and transferred patients to EMS. One was transported to a local hospital for further care.
There were probably around 20 swimmer-in-distress calls today alone in Ocean County.
Please never enter the water without lifeguards present. Rip currents are real and deadly.

Kami pernah melakukan pelacakan rip current di Pantai Drini dengan menggunakan larutan URANINE
Larutan ini aman untuk lingkungan karena bahan utamanya garam. Eksperimen ini bertujuan melihat arah pergerakan dan kecepatan rip current, serta memberikan kesan visual yang jelas. Rip current adalah arus balik yang berbentuk saluran sempit, kecepatannya bisa mencapai 2 m/detik. Arus ini sangat berbahaya karena dapat menarik dengan sangat kuat. Rip current ada yang bersifat menetap dan ada yang berpindah-pindah, tergantung beberapa faktor pembentuknya.
Apabila kita berada di pantai, salah satu cara mudah mengidentifikasi keberadaan rip current adalah dengan melihat ada tidaknya buih pada zona pecah gelombang. Area yg tidak terbentuk buih memiliki kedalaman lebih dari area sekitarnya sehingga berpotensi membentuk rip current apabila ada suplai arus yg cukup. Dari permukaan, area ini justru tampak tenang, tapi di bawahnya terdapat arus yang kuat menarik ke arah laut. Hal ini bisa dilihat secara jelas dari pewarna yang membentuk semacam "jalur" menuju ke arah laut. Lokasi laka laut yang menyebabkan belasan siswa tenggelam tanggal 28 Jan 2025 tepat di tempat kami melakukan eksperimen ini.
Tipe rip current di sebagian besar pantai kawasan karst Gunungkidul adalah reef rip current. Rip current jenis ini cenderung menetap dikontrol oleh keberadaan rataan terumbu. Celah antara rataan terumbu terisi pasir yang notabene lebih dalam dan dinamis. Kemunculan rip current pada celah tersebut dikontrol oleh pasang surut. Karena karakternya yang menetap, jadi sebagian besar lokasi rip current di Gunungkidul sudah diketahui.
TIDAK PERLU TAKUT KE PANTAI, Namun tetap hati2 jika berenang, kenali mana area berbahaya dan PATUHI HIMBAUAN PETUGAS!

SUKnowing how to spot and manage rip currents can turn a hazard into a helpful tool.
Rip currents are fast, narrow flows of water moving directly away from the beach. They form when incoming waves push water toward the shore, and that water finds a path back out through channels, often shaped by longshore currents.
Here’s how to spot and safely manage a rip current:
Look for the Signs
Gaps in breaking waves, darker or calmer water, or foam and debris moving steadily out to sea.
Understand the Structure
Rip currents form a neck, where the water moves quickly away from the shore, and a head, where the current slows and disperses into deeper water.
Know What to Do
If you’re caught in one, stay calm. Don’t fight it. Float or tread water, move parallel to the beach to exit the current, and signal for help early, before you feel tired.
Rip currents can be dangerous, but they’re also part of the ocean’s natural movement.
The more you understand them, the better prepared you’ll be.
