MORip currents are one of the most dangerous hazards at the beach, but they’re much easier to spot if you know what you’re looking for! 🌊
This video shows a perfect illustration at low tide:
The Incoming: Water washes up and pools on the sides.
The Channel: A narrow, focused stream of water pulls rapidly back out toward the ocean.
The Danger: This “river” within the ocean can pull even the strongest swimmers away from shore.
How to escape a rip current:
Don’t panic or fight it. You can’t swim against the pull.
Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current.
Once free, swim at an angle back to the beach.
Stay safe and always keep an eye on the tide! 🚩

10🌊 Beaches access has been restricted across the Tri-State on Wednesday and Thursday as Hurricane Erin churns up the East Coast and stirs up large swells and life-threatening rip currents.
While Erin is forecasted to stay offshore, waves of 8 to 12 feet are possible at area beaches. And the National Weather Service said there's a high rip current risk until Friday for the South Shore of Long Island and the Jersey Shore.
NYC has closed its beaches on Wednesday and Thursday; lifeguards will keep people out of the water, though visitors can remain on the sand.
"Wednesday and Thursday—no swimming, because [Erin] can cause rough rip tides and high waves, even if you're an experienced swimmer," Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday.
Both state and local beaches will be closed on Long Island, including Jones Beach, Robert Moses State Park Beach, Lido Beach, Point Lookout and more.
Many beaches at the Jersey Shore have also closed, including at Belmar, Seaside Heights, Long Beach Island and Wildwood.
“Enjoy the shore, enjoy this beautiful weather but stay out of the water,” Gov. Phil Murphy said Tuesday.
