The Burmese stone will cost three times more. Here’s why: pigeon blood isn’t just a color. It’s a designation originally reserved for a specific shade that only Burmese rubies could produce. An open red with a slight pink undertone. Vivid, but not dark. Pure, with no brown or orange muddying the tone. It’s the pinnacle of what ruby can be. And for decades, it was synonymous with Burma. But then Burma became inaccessible. Brands couldn’t source the material. Collectors couldn’t buy it. And the market faced a problem: demand for pigeon blood rubies didn’t disappear just because supply did. So labs adapted. Some began certifying Mozambique rubies as « pigeon blood » if the color was close enough. Same terminology. Different origin. But here’s what that shift obscures: there’s a real difference. Burmese pigeon blood has a saturation and fluorescence that Mozambique stones rarely match. It’s not subjective. It’s measurable. And collectors who’ve seen both side by side know it instantly. This is the credibility problem facing ruby grading today. The term « pigeon blood » used to mean something absolute. Now it’s being stretched to accommodate market realities. And that creates opportunity for informed buyers.
