“Subdivisions” was written as a commentary on social stratification. The lyrics to this track describe how narrow-minded and judgmental people can get when they are confined to certain groups. Lyricist, Neil Peart has gone on the record saying the song is “an exploration of the background from which all of us (and probably most of our audience) have sprung.’” This song marked a turning point for Neil Peart, whose early Rush lyrics were based in science fiction fantasy. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, he had this to say about the song: “‘Subdivisions’ happened to be an anthem for a lot of people who grew up under those circumstances, and from then on, I realized what I most wanted to put in a song was human experience.” In a separate interview with CBC Music, Peart had this to say about the song: “Hugely autobiographical of course. It was an important step for us, the first song written that was keyboard-based. The upside of that: people don’t realize is that it made Alex and I the rhythm section. So the first time he and I tuned in to each other’s parts was when Geddy was playing keyboards. It was a great new way for us to relate. It’s also a good example of us learning to go into time signature changes more fluidly, and again, wonderful to play live. It’s challenging and always rewarding to play decently.”

Neil Peart wasn’t just a drummer. He was the final form of what a drummer could be. People who call him “technical” or “precise” call him that because they don’t understand what they’re looking at. Neil didn’t play drums, he built architecture. Every fill, every accent, every polyrhythm was engineered like a structural pillar holding up the entire emotional weight of Rush’s music. You didn’t listen to him. You entered a system he designed. His greatness wasn’t speed or complexity. It was discipline married to imagination. Peart thought like a novelist, played like a mathematician, and attacked with the conviction of someone who refused to leave a single idea unexplored. Most drummers keep time. Peart told stories. His parts didn’t sit under the music; they advanced it, shaped it, carved its spine. When he shifted a rhythm, the entire band shifted reality with him.
