In Judaism, time is not something we are losing—it is something we are entrusted with. The Torah introduces time as sacred before it introduces law. The very first mitzvah given to the Jewish people is Kiddush HaChodesh, sanctifying the new moon. Before we are commanded how to act, we are taught how to relate to time. 🕰️ Much of human suffering comes from our relationship with time: impatience, urgency, comparison, regret, anticipation. We rush futures that haven’t arrived and replay pasts that no longer exist. What we call “a lack of patience” is often just a conflict with time itself. We are constantly chasing it, fighting it, or fearing its absence. Impatience is not just a personality trait—it is a spiritual dislocation. iYet Judaism insists that meaning only exists in the present. “Now” is where choice, holiness, and transformation happen. Kabbalah teaches that time and space are not punishments or limitations, but vessels (kelim). According to the Sefer Yetzirah, the world is structured through dimensions of time (shanah), space (olam), and soul (nefesh). These structures bind us to the physical world so that consciousness can be elevated through action. Without time and space, growth would be impossible. Shabbat embodies this truth. By ceasing from creative labor, we stop trying to dominate time and instead enter into relationship with it. The Talmud teaches that Shabbat is a taste of Olam HaBa—a higher world—because it frees us from the tyranny of urgency (Shabbat 10b). We don’t escape time; we sanctify it, and in doing so, we experience freedom. Much of our suffering comes from confusing speed with purpose. Jewish life is not about outrunning time, but aligning with it. The calendar itself becomes a spiritual map—cycles of return, renewal, and patience. Time is not linear in Judaism; it is layered, cyclical, and alive with memory and possibility. When we understand that time and space are here to give structure—not to confine us—we shift from a survival mindset to a sacred one. We stop chasing life and begin inhabiting it. This is what it means to live with emunah: trusting that each moment contains exactly what the soul needs. Amen✨
