Macar yönetmen Béla Tarr, muhteşem uzun çekimlerin ve insanlık durumunu ifade eden melankolik filmlerin ustasıdır. Siyah beyaz sinemanın kalıntılarının modernist maestrosu Tarr, komünizm sonrası Macaristan’ın manzaralarını, yalnızlık ve çürüme duygusunu ifade eder. Macar halkının çok az tanıdığı Tarr, film çekmenin ve dünyaya anlatmanın belirli bir biçiminde devrim yarattı.
Gençlik yıllarında filozof olmak isteyen, fakat akademide pek de şansı yaver gitmeyen Tarr, babasının kendisine hediye ettiği 8mm’lik kamerayı eline aldıktan sonra yönetmen olmaya karar verir. Tabii, biraz da Macaristan’ın sol hareketine dahil olmasıyla değişti.
Avangart film yapımcısı Bela Tarr’ın inkar edilemez derecede esrarengiz bir şekilde çağrıştıran filmleri, krizler ve çöküş zamanlarında toplumsal çevreleri dramatize ederek, tam da bu dünyaya ait şeyleri ve insanın bunlarla olan ilişkisini araştırmak için Heidegger’in varoluşsal ve fenomenolojik sorgulamayı temel odağına almıştır.
