Scientists placed a piece of transparent glass inside an aquarium. On the left was a fierce pike, and on the right several smaller fish were swimming around. When the hungry pike saw the smaller fish, it rushed forward to attack. Bang! It hit the glass and bounced back. The pike couldn’t believe it and kept attacking again and again, but every attempt was useless. The repeated collisions tore off its scales and injured its head. Finally, the pike became frightened and retreated to a corner, trembling. Then the scientists quietly removed the glass, and the smaller fish swam freely everywhere, even touching the pike’s mouth. But the pike never opened its mouth to eat them. Even though it was hungry, it refused to attack. In its mind, the smaller fish had disappeared, and only the invisible wall remained. After a few days, the pike died of starvation, surrounded by food. This is known as the pike effect or pike syndrome. #curiosities #facts #curiousfacts

With a computer program called MOANA and NASA satellite data, scientists can identify the colorful plant-like organisms that drift in Atlantic Ocean currents. These phytoplankton nourish Earth's marine life, produce oxygen, absorb carbon, and turn satellite images into vibrant works of art. The first image, taken by NASA's Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite on May 16, 2025, shows the natural color of phytoplankton blooming in the nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Namibia While each individual phytoplankton is microscopic, blooms of billions can be seen swirling in shades of greens and blues from orbit. Different species appear as different colors, and PACE detects the entire spectrum. By putting PACE color data into a computer program called Multi Ordination Analysis - the MOANA of this ocean tale - scientists can create maps where three different types of phytoplankton are thriving. The second image dives into the data to map the different communities in teal and purple. This helps provide insights into the health of schools of fish and other ocean life. Eventually, the pike became frightened and retreated to a corner of the tank. After some time, the scientists quietly removed the glass barrier. The smaller fish now swam freely throughout the aquarium, even brushing against the pike's mouth. But the pike never tried to eat them again. Even though it was hungry, it refused to attack. In its mind, the invisible wall was still there. A few days later, the pike reportedly died of starvation, surrounded by food. This phenomenon is often referred to as the Pike Effect or Pike Syndrome. It's often used as a metaphor for how repeated failure can create invisible limits in the mind.
