HOI started my home bakery business over a decade ago at the farmer’s market. Because of that exposure, I started getting orders and more orders. I took orders all year long and quickly became booked. In fact, I had to turn down orders almost daily because of the growth.
Taking orders means you have to fulfill the order. I know, right? Sounds simple. But I started taking on too much and the stress of filling orders and baking every single day was too much for me. I had to streamline my home bakery and figure out what would work for me. So I stopped taking orders.
Now, when I bake, I only do pop-ups or first-come, first-served events. I make what I can and hope that it sells. If I accidentally burn a batch of cookies, I don’t have to re-make them because a customer ordered them. I just won’t have as many cookies available! I feel like this has really helped my stress level and I’m also enjoying my bakery more than ever.
This method works for me right now in my business. Taking orders from customers may be the way you need to work YOUR business right now. That’s the beauty of owning your own business-you can manage it the way you want!
And who knows? Someday, when life slows down a little, I may start taking a cookie order every now and then!
