METhe alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) has an incredibly powerful jaw, with a bite that is both extremely fast and strong. The speed and force of its jaw closure make it highly effective in capturing prey and defending itself. When hunting, the alligator snapping turtle remains motionless and uses a worm-like appendage on its tongue to lure fish. Once the fish gets close enough, the turtle snaps its jaws shut with lightning speed to capture its prey. Its bite force is approximately 1000 psi, which is comparable to that of a lion or a tiger.

The “bite speed” of a common snapping turtle, referring to how quickly it can strike, is estimated to be up to 174 miles per hour (280 kilometers per hour). This includes the lunging and jaw snapping action, which occurs in a remarkably short time of 4-8 milliseconds!!
Even if you think you have fast relaxes, you will not be faster than a striking snapping turtle. I like to consider myself to have very fast reflexes and I didn’t even react until it was almost too late as you can see in this slowed down video.
Stay safe out there, don’t engage with wildlife if you don’t know what you’re doing and give them plenty of space and respect! This was almost a very educational lesson on what not to do 🐢
