PEDid you know that dogs can be in heat anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks?
We’ve only ever had girl dogs and here are some of our tried and true tips for dealing with heat cycles. It was actually in our breeder contract that we’d only do an ovary sparing spay, and only after 2 years old so that’s what we did with Pearl.
Some dogs can experience low energy and appetite when in heat, but we haven’t had that happen with either of our goldens.
There’s some new and interesting research regarding spay recommendations—some breed specific—so be sure to chat with your veterinarian if you have any questions!

_NNot a scare-mongering post or anything in that fashion, but I realised I’ve never spoken much about Nala’s spaying journey on here, and I think that’s because she was just so poorly after it 😭
We got a call from the vets on the day to say there had been a complication in the spay operation and she had ‘bled out’, but they’d managed to stop the bleeding and the spay had been successful, but she needed to stay in the vets longer so they could monitor her. Thankfully, she perked up and ate pretty much straight away so they let us pick her up that evening. 🩷
She was weak and docile from the anaesthesia but was her happy self when she saw us, so that was a positive. But it’s the weeks after that we saw a huge difference, I think we went back to the vets 5 times because she wasn’t right, she was being sick, shaking all the time and just generally didn’t seem well. In the end they gave us antibiotics and it cleared up whatever she was experiencing at the time as the vet didn’t know.
After healing and being able to go back to daycare, we saw a huge difference in Nala, now I’m not a vet so it could be change of hormones, or the trauma from the few weeks op and post-op she experienced, but she was completely different. Barking whenever anyone came near her (apart from family), wouldn’t go into daycare (and have me leave her), she had to be carried inside so she’d go in or she would try and run off 🥲.
It was a difficult time! But we’ve come out of the other side of it and are still learning these behaviours today and comforts for her. We love Nala so much and wouldn’t ever wish for her to be any other way🩷🩷🩷 #dogsofinstagram #spaying #lovedogs #reactivedog

MOShould you allow your pet to have a litter before neutering?
Allowing a female cat or dog to produce a litter does not have any benefits to the animal. Animals who go through heat cycles and pregnancy are at higher risk for uterine and mammary problems, including mammary cancer, which can be fatal.
The final verdict: We do not recommend allowing your pet to have a litter before the neutering!

CANot all dogs can be taken to the shelter and sent for adoption. There’s simply too many homeless dogs to find a family for all of them.
Taking dogs from the streets is also not helping to lower the number of the homeless dogs in Romania. As long as there are unwanted puppies born, there will be abandoned puppies. And as long as there are places with enough resources for the homeless dogs to live, there will be dogs in those places. If you take one, another one will appear soon.
The way to control the population of stray dogs in Romania and eventually to solve the problem of overpopulation will be done by sterilising. When there won’t be any more unwanted puppies born, the numbers of homeless dogs will start to decrease for good.
These five dogs are not sleeping on the couches, but they have rather safe living environment, where they are fed and treated kindly. Comparing to the average of Romanian strays, they are doing good. But if not being sterilised, the situation would have got out of control really fast. As it does in many places. Puppies being born one litter after another, stress, suffering and fights.
Every sterilisation makes a huge difference. By spaying just one dog, you can save thousands of puppies. Be part of the change, support spay and neuter!
