A little structural engineering lesson! Jettying is where upper level walls are shifted out beyond the area of the floor below. Beams supporting these walls have to be cantilevered out past the lower level walls. When a structure utilizes jettying - a negative bending moment is created which causes the beam to bend upwards. The positive bending moment from regular floor load is counteracted by the negative moment from the wall supported at the end of the cantilever. This can drastically reduce the depth of beams needed for floor framing! (Yes I know this is technically not a propped cantilever - it’s more like a cantilever with a back span!) #lego #structuralengineering #brickgineer

💡 This isn’t just a screw. It’s applied engineering. In construction, structural engineering, and high-end building projects, every detail matters. Professional tools, premium materials, and precise execution are what separate average work from long-lasting, high-value structures. Anyone working with solid wood, infrastructure, or real estate development knows: the foundation determines the final result. 🔩 Precision. Performance. Reliability. Exactly what the market demands. #Construction #Engineering #Building #Tools #Architecture

You’re structural engineer looking to up skill. What are the most important tools you should learn? Understanding the latest software and programming languages may be helpful, but the true backbone of structural engineering lies in mastering the fundamentals. For those looking to deepen their expertise, focusing on the foundational knowledge of how structures behave at various levels is crucial. Reading influential textbooks in structural engineering can provide this foundational knowledge. Additionally, learning advanced analysis methods such as nonlinear pushover and time-history analysis, along with design philosophies like displacement-based and performance-based design, can significantly enhance your ability to develop solutions that are not only effective but also resilient. #engineering #civilengineering #structuralengineering #earthquakeengineering #seismicdesign #performancebaseddesign #structuraldesign #steeldesign #concretedesign #revitstructure #etabs #sap2000 #steelstructures #steelstructure #concretestructures #highrisestructures #tallbuildings #professionalengineer #structuralengineering #structuraldesign #structuralanalysis #sustainability #professionaldevelopment

A showcase in timber tectonics, traditional joinery, robotic manufacturing and sustainable materials. The Makers' KUbe, designed by @big_builds @bjarkeingels @bnimarchitects for the University of Kansas School of Architecture & Design, is an all-wood mass timber student building with no steel connection hardware or fasteners. As the structural engineers of the building, we posed the question: could the structural frame be 100% wood? Full-scale connection prototyping (with a resulting full scale mockup, pictured here) and a deep dive into pure timber engineering ensued. #StructuralEngineering #masstimber #joinery #architecture

The Backbone of the Mountain: Building a Reinforced Slope Stabilization Wall! ⛰️🔒 Witness heavy-duty civil engineering in action! This video shows the intense construction of a reinforced concrete grid wall—a critical structure built to stabilize a steep, exposed slope, often near major infrastructure like highways or large buildings. This isn't just cosmetic; it's a vital safety measure against landslides and soil erosion. Precision and Strength in Every Bar This complex structure requires meticulous planning and powerful materials: The Steel Skeleton (0:00 - 0:12): The crew is busy assembling the dense rebar (reinforcement bar) cage directly against the natural slope. Notice the intricate pattern: Vertical Columns and Horizontal Beams: These form a sturdy, interconnected grid pattern. The steel is tied together tightly to form a massive cage. Slope Anchors: The vertical columns are driven deep into the stable ground beneath, anchoring the entire structure to the hillside. The Purpose of the Grid: When concrete is poured into this cage (a process that follows later), it creates a robust, segmented retaining structure. This grid allows water to drain naturally through the exposed gaps, preventing hydrostatic pressure buildup behind the wall—a common cause of retaining wall failure. Safety and Scale: Workers in high-visibility gear are seen scrambling over the steep rebar structure, highlighting the challenging and skilled nature of the work. The sheer scale, with the hills stretching into the background and the crane visible in the distance, underscores the massive effort involved in large-scale infrastructure stability. This construction is the definition of geotechnical necessity, securing the mountain's face against the forces of nature to ensure long-term stability. Can you spot the pre-installed wire mesh at the top, a final line of defense against smaller falling debris? Tell us what you see! 👇 #SlopeStabilization #RetainingWall #CivilEngineering #Rebar #ConstructionSafety #Geotechnical #Infrastructure #HeavyConstruction #SkilledTrades
