Their flat, round bodies and tall fins make them look almost like a swimming disk. Sunfish are often seen near the ocean’s surface, where they bask in sunlight, which helps regulate their body temperature. Despite their size, ocean sunfish mainly eat small, soft-bodied animals such as jellyfish. They move slowly and rely on their thick skin and size to protect them from predators. After nearly 1000 dives and 15 years of diving I finally was very lucky to see this beautiful sunfish - the size of this individual was around 2.5m They normally stay in depths of several hundreds of meters, but occasionally go shallow to get cleaned. Going down to 40m at 16C cold water was worth the few seconds being close to this stunning animal. #sunfish #mondfisch #molamola

It’s now recognized as the heaviest bony fish in the world, with individuals weighing over 2,700 kilograms. These deep-diving fish usually stay far offshore, but in the Galápagos, seasonal upwellings bring colder, nutrient-rich water and with it, the chance to see them at recreational depths. They rise to visit cleaning stations, where smaller fish pick parasites off their thick, rough skin. Many sunfish sightings in the Pacific once thought to be Mola mola are now known to be Mola alexandrini. Watching one glide past feels like spotting a prehistoric spacecraft in slow motion.
