Often we become frustrated because we think switching to a new task is just a matter of will, but it is often a matter of missing skills. And we can help kids to build these life skills. Task switching can be difficult (and expend a lot of energy) for kids who struggle with these executive function skills and also for kids who are very engaged in a meaningful task that is goal directed, even if we don’t always see their goal (this is why timed cues for transition like “5 more minutes” may not be the most effective- because they may have a goal in mind they are working toward that we cant see*)… There are strategies and supports we can use to help kids build these skills, like: -helping them to identify current goals and modify/compromise their goals when time is a factor*, -helping them to transition to a new goal and plan for the new task, -helping them to rehearse and understand rules and steps for the new task to keep them in working memory, -and giving them the first step for the new task. *I will be sharing a strategy for this in my next reel💕 #ot #executivefunction #executivefunctioning #multitasking #followingdirections #pediatricoccupationaltherapy #adhd #neurodivergent
