💰 Bus fares could be going up for the thousands and thousands of people who ride the bus each and every day to get around town. 🚌 And specifically, the bus fare increases are going to hit youth, seniors, and the disabled the most: 25 cents per ride adding up to 75 cents per day. All riders using a monthly pass or using the monthly fare cap would see their costs go from $80 to $90 - a $10 difference each and every month, adding up to $120 per year. For a family where both parents are using the bus, plus maybe a kid or two getting to school, that’s a big difference. For those using the annual pass, that will go from $880 to $990. That’s why I’ll be voting No on Bill 54 at Wednesday’s City Council hearing, and as someone who rides the bus on a daily basis to get around to most things, I hope that bus riders will share their perspectives at honolulucitycouncil.org as well. Finally, we are working on some ideas for how to expand the low-income fare program so people who really, really need the bus to get to work, or people who don’t have other alternatives, can get around more fairly. #TheBus #PublicTransportation #PublicTransit

Bill 54 would raise fares for people who rely on TheBus every day. At a time when so many families are already stretched thin, this proposal moves us in the wrong direction. If you oppose the bus fare increase, now is the time to speak up. Submitting testimony is quick, easy, and makes a real difference. Let City Council know where you stand on this important issue!

How much would you pay to ride TheBus? Comment below. Honolulu transit fares could go up starting next year to help make up for lower ridership and pay for escalating costs. For some riders who have been using the system for years, the price increases are just another example of an increasing cost of living to which many feel resigned. The City Council’s Budget Committee is scheduled discuss the new rates Oct. 14. Along with raising the monthly adult fare from $80 to $90, Bill 54 would raise the cost of an annual adult fare from $880 to $990, seven-day passes from $35 to $45, the monthly youth fare from $40 to $45 and the annual fare for kūpuna from $45 to $50, among other changes. Single fares would still be $3, but Oʻahu riders who pay with cash would be charged an extra 25 cents to encourage Holo card use. TheHandi-Van fares would go from $2.25 to $2.50 for a single ride. Since the city started offering monthly bus passes in 1979, fares have climbed faster than inflation. An adult monthly pass cost $15 back then, the equivalent of $64.03 today.
