No — cliff jumpers don’t throw rocks reduce the water surface tension to soften the impact at landing. Here are the five real reasons why we do it : 1) Calibrating height. From above, it’s surprisingly hard to judge how high a cliff actually is. By watching the rock’s airtime, we can estimate the height of the jump to within a few meters and adjust our timing accordingly. 2) Checking the gap. Sometimes the water isn’t directly under the take-off — there can be a horizontal distance to clear. We throw the rock along the trajectory we intend to take. If it lands safely in deep water, that’s a green light. If it hits rocks or lands too close to the edge, we don’t jump. 3) Aligning safety and filming. The rock shows the safety team in the water where we plan to land so they can position themselves correctly. It also helps camera operators anticipate our landing zone and get the right angle without blocking the shot. 4) Making a “blind landing” readable. When the water is perfectly flat, it can look like a mirror from the air, making depth perception unreliable. The rock creates splash and ripples that give us visual texture — making it much easier to spot the landing and rotate at the right speed. 5) Because it’s simply fun. Sometimes you just want to send a rock flying before you send yourself. CAILLOUUU
