Did you make New Year’s resolutions? How are they going so far? I read that most resolutions are abandoned around the end of the third week of January, so maybe we can check back in around then. This year I resolve to learn, film and post at least 365 songs, as long as people keep requesting them! If the requests stop coming in, SO BE IT. The goal will be dumped and its ashes scattered along the boulevard of broken resolutions. My lifetime resolution is be ok with whatever comes my way, to just deal and get on with it. Having this outlook is especially helpful as an independent artist, as tides and allegiances are always shifting, the hustle is constant, and it’s often hard to know what’s coming your way. You can never be truly ready for the future, but you can always be ready to accept it, and ready to express and humiliate yourself in new and creative ways. US alternative rock / shoegaze outfit The Veldt will finally release their 'Illuminated 1989' album on November 24 via Portland-based Little Cloud Records and North Carolina’s 5BC Records bandcamp This is the original 1989 full-length record produced by Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie previewed by the lead track 'The Everlasting Gobstopper' and the single 'Aurora Borealis' with Elizabeth Fraser making a cameo appearance on backing vocals towards the end, plus a B-side remix, created by The Veldt.

Guthrie also remastered the album for vinyl earlier this year. While originally intended to be the band's first album, their label Capitol Records shelved the recording and sent them back into the studio with producer Lincoln Fong (Moose), resulting in their first album released with the title 'Marigolds'.

One of the most notable first-wave shoegaze bands, formed in North Carolina in the 1980s, The Veldt revolves around identical twins Daniel Chavis (vocals, guitar) and Danny Chavis (guitar). Their unique sound was influenced by Cocteau Twins as readily as Marvin Gaye and free-jazz warriors Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders. Referencing European post-punk while embracing modern hip-hop, these trailblazers work with transient dreamscapes as fluidly as solid song structures.
 
Pitchfork included The Veldt's album 'Afrodisiac', produced by the legendary Ray Shulman (The Sundays, Bjork, The Sugarcubes) and released via Mercury Records, in the top 50 shoegaze albums ever released, while Stereogum included ‘Until You’re Forever’ in the top 31 shoegaze tracks. Their sound also inspired future generations of alternative artists, including TV On the Radio.

The Veldt's journey is fascinating. Performing since they were children, the Chavis brothers’ musical roots lead back to the church and southern juke-joints, and listening to music that included gospel, Motown and Pink Floyd. The Veldt formed in the late 80’s in Raleigh amongst the legendary North Carolina music scene of the time, initially signing with Mammoth Records - leading to a chain of major-label relationships that took the group across Europe and the U.S. playing shows with the likes of Throwing Muses, Pixies, Cocteau Twins

Silver Gore's take on The Misfits' 1978 track "Hybrid Moments" was among the more unusual covers to come from Best Fit's secret sessions at this year's @endoftheroad festival. The song was penned by Glenn Danzig for the American punk band's debut album Static Age but never made the final cut, and wasn't actually released until the mid 80s. In the hands of Silver Gore it becomes something entirely new, different and utterly brilliant. The cover was part of a secret session by the duo for Best Fit at September's End of the Road, which also saw pop-up performances from The Orchestra (For Now), Throwing Muses, Truman Sinclair, Squid, Tyler Ballgame, Jake Xerxes Fussell, The Sophs, Ellie O' Neill, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, jasmine.4.t, Lily Seabird, and Stewart Lee with Black Country, New Road. Singer-drummer Ava Gore and producer Ethan P. Flynn – have been one of 2025’s most intriguing and impressive breakouts, conquering every showcase around and putting out a contender for both the year’s best EP with Dogs in Heaven, and best song with “All the Good Men”. Silver Gore continue their European tour with shows in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and France throughout November and December. Best Fit's secret sessions have become a key part of End of the Road each year, bringing together artists from across the line-up in a series of short sets, exlusive cover, collaborations, and live interviews and Q&As. Past guests have included Lucy Dacus, St Vincent, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Moses Sumney, Laura Marling, Patti Smith, and Frightened Rabbit - who played a now iconic version of "The Modern Leper". End of the Road returns next year for its 20th anniversary edition, with headliners Pulp, Mac DeMarco and CMAT already announced, alongside one other secret headliner. Tickets for the event – which runs from 3-6 September 2026 – are on sale now from endoftheroadfestival.com!
