Transformers (2007) — Director Michael Bay was initially reluctant to direct the film because he thought a “toy movie” would be for kids. To convince him, the president of DreamWorks sent him to “Transformers School” at Hasbro headquarters, where he learned the deep, noble lore of the franchise and became hooked.
The production was so massive that the military provided real F-22 Raptors and A-10 Warthogs for the filming, making it one of the largest collaborations between the Pentagon and a film crew. To save money on CGI, Bay used real explosions and practical pyrotechnics whenever possible, which is why the actors’ reactions to the “shrapnel” often look so genuinely terrified.
