👉Can you relate? More videos coming soon. Do you have memories that you try your best to push down, but they keep coming up for you when you don’t want them to. When those memories are from traumatic events, that can cause an overwhelming level of distress that is hard to bring back down. This video is a quick summary of a metaphor that I have often used to help describe how working through painful memories in trauma therapy can help. 👉More on this in my No.1 Sunday Times Bestselling book, Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? Progress in therapy doesn’t always look like happiness. More often, it looks like subtle shifts, pausing before reacting, noticing your body sooner, recovering a little faster after hard moments. When you’ve lived in survival mode, your nervous system learns safety before joy. Those quiet changes may not feel dramatic, but they are the beginning of getting to your goals. #therapy #traumahealing #traumatherapy

The first therapy session can feel really scary. You’re sitting with someone you just met and your brain is trying to decide if it’s safe to be honest… so you might go blank, talk too much, laugh, apologize, or want to cancel. Nothing about that is weird. Your nervous system is just protecting you. But please know that the first session is just about getting to know each other and your comfort is a priority. There’s no pressure to talk about anything in specific. And you can also get a chance to ask any questions you’re curious about. #therapytips #traumatherapy

Yes, excessive shopping is also a way of coping… 😬🥺 When you’re in survival mode, your mind is focused on finding a way to feel safe again. That small hit of happiness after buying something isn’t about the item — it’s your nervous system finally catching a break. 👉🏼For a few seconds, you feel comfort, control, and relief. Coping doesn’t always look like cigarettes or alcohol - yet still is a very common way to cope through survival mode for many. BUT sometimes it’s also online shopping, overworking, cleaning, or scrolling — anything that helps your body escape stress for a moment. Because when your mind has lived in chaos, calm can feel unfamiliar. FYI: Many of these habits trace back to childhood. If you grew up managing emotions alone, you learned to self-soothe through little rewards or distractions. As adults, that turns into spending, fixing, achieving — all ways of saying, “I just need to feel okay right now.” It’s a modern habit many of us have, and you’re probably not the only one stuck in survival mode — often without even realizing it. We get used to running on adrenaline, calling it “normal,” when really it’s our nervous system living in defense mode. Rest feels unsafe, stillness feels wrong, and so we keep doing to avoid feeling. ❤️‍🩹Awareness is the first step to healing. But true healing goes beyond awareness — it’s about teaching your body safety again. 👉🏼That’s the work we do in my 3-month Phoenix Program: helping your nervous system feel safety so your mind can believe it. That’s where real healing begins. I’m a trauma therapist, and here’s what I do when my client starts to drift or shut down in session. When a body goes still, voices get quiet, movements shrink, and the room feels quieter… that’s not resistance. It’s a biological survival signal. The nervous system is shifting into a protective state, or a “freeze” state. First I pause. I name what I’m noticing, like “I’m sensing your body has just slowed down, and maybe feels like it’s shutting down, is that right?” Then I invite connection with the body. A simple cue might be, “I’ll invite you to slowly move your body, take a breath, notice your feet on the floor, and feel your spine lengthen.” This slow movement isn’t about pushing. It’s about reintroducing presence. Inviting the body back into space. Helping the nervous system remember what it’s like to feel bigger, taller, and present. When clients shut down they are in a freeze or dorsal vagal collapse. Understanding that helps us respond differently. Not with more talking or faster interventions, but with gentle grounding, somatic awareness, and co-regulation. If you’re a trauma therapist, try this next time you sense the drift. Notice your own nervous system. Ground yourself. Then gently invite the body back into aliveness. I’ll be launching virtual EMDR groups and individual consultation in January 2026 for trauma therapists who want to deepen their work and stay grounded in their own nervous systems while doing it. ➡️ Drop a the word WAITLIST in the comments if you’d like me to add you to the early list! #traumatherapy #somatictherapy #emdr #polyvagal #traumainformed #therapisttools #emdrconsultation #traumawork #emdrtraining

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. -EMDRIA #EMDR #emdrtherapy #traumatherapy #therapy #ptsd

Not all grounding techniques work the same for everyone, especially when you’ve experienced trauma. 💭🤔 Have any of these techniques worked for you? 🦋Butterfly hug comes from emdr as a grounding resource. 🧘‍♀️Coregulated breathing is important and used for instance when one person models breathing to help someone ground. 🪨Weighted pressure like weighted blankets can connect you with your body in the here and now. 🌱Somatic tracking is paying attention to your body without trying to change or fix it. being with and holding curiosity and compassion. ⚓️Polyvagal anchoring: developing an internal or external anchor to ground your nervous system. 🧊Cold reset: drinking something cold or putting cold water on your face to invite you into the moment. this helps when there is emotional or physical overwhelm. 🌸Movement grounding is using gentle movements to help disrupt fight, flight, freeze responses and connect with the moment. 👀Sensory naming: naming what all five senses are experiencing in the moment. 🏝️Guided imagery/safe space: from hypnosis and emdr used to bring an embodied sense of being safe enough. 📩 Book a free 15-minute consultation and start your healing journey today!
