Behind the scenes of my triggerfish encounter video that hit over 8M views Everyone thinks divers worry about sharks… but the truth? It’s the triggerfish 😅 Story time: I was snorkeling in Okinawa at a beautiful dive site when, about five minutes in, I felt a nibble on my left leg. At first, I thought I’d bumped into something, so I kept swimming and filming a school of fish until this happened. I’ve encountered many triggerfish in the past, but never an angry one like this. 🐟 Triggerfish are super territorial during nesting season and will charge at anyone who gets too close. Most are pretty chill… until you meet an angry one. Respect their space and enjoy the show from a safe distance. 🐠😬🌊 Footage by : 🎥 @scuba.earth 🪼 FOLLOW FOR MORE CONTENT 🌊 Despite its aggressive behavior towards divers during the nesting period, it is fantastic to meet the titan triggerfish relaxed on the seabed. These fish get their names the fact that their first three dorsal fins are adapted in such a way that the first one, which is very strong, can be braced into an upright position by the second, allowing it to lock itself into holes. When they want to come back out, the second spine acts as a “trigger” to unlock the first. Triggerfish use this adaptation when feeling threatened-or when going to sleep. Once they’re “triggered in,” it’s nearly impossible to get them out. The strong, sharp teeth of triggerfish grow throughout their lives, just like human fingernails. They attack divers, fish, and anyone who gets close to their nest: as soon as their trigger is raised, the phase of aggression and nest protection begins. They swim quickly toward the intruder, trying to bite with their large teeth! This beautiful specimen allowed me to get super close, and you can clearly see that its trigger is not raised. They don’t attack for fun — they’re protecting their eggs buried in the sand. 🔺 What most divers don’t know: Triggerfish defend their nests in a cone-shaped zone that extends vertically above, not just horizontally around, the nest. 🧠 How to avoid a bite: • Don’t swim above a triggerfish — exit the zone sideways, not upward • Give them space, especially in known nesting areas • Stay calm and maintain awareness — they normally give warning signs before striking This isn’t about fear — it’s about respecting marine life boundaries and understanding behavior before it becomes a problem. Suddenly, I felt a nibble on my left leg. At first I thought I’d bumped into something until I realized there were multiple triggerfish around me. I quickly swam away, but one followed me and attacked my camera. Definitely the most unique souvenir I brought back from Okinawa, Japan🙂.
