ITTwo is better than one… right? 🐶🐶
Introducing a new puppy (or a foster dog) to your first dog can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming if you’re not prepared.
We get asked this all the time, so long time ago we wrote a blog post sharing exactly how we introduced Winky to Ollie (spoiler: it took time, patience, and a lot of trial and error).
Here are a few key highlights of our experience:
☛ Understand your dog’s temperament — Consider your first dog’s age, energy, and health before bringing a puppy into the mix. Once you have selected the puppy (or the foster dog!) start introducing their scent before they come home.
☛ Meet on neutral ground and let them take things at their own pace.
☛ Keep things separate — food, toys, beds, play zones. It helps your first dog adjust and sets clear boundaries for your pup. Make time for solo walks or cuddles with your first dog, so they don’t feel left out during the transition.
☛ Supervise early playtime to prevent unwanted behaviours or accidents. Instead of full access from day one, slowly increasing shared time as trust builds.
☛ Don’t rush the bond. Winky adored Ollie instantly but it took Ollie a few months to feel the same. And that’s totally normal.
♡ Having two dogs is double the work, but also double the joy, when done thoughtfully.
