This weeks guest on mentality monsters back with our Conflict Conversations Series is Mr Alan McBride, Born in the 60’s & originally from the Westland area of North Belfast a loyalist paramilitary stronghold, he has spent decades turning personal tragedy into purpose. In October 1993, his wife Sharon and her father Desmond Frizzell were killed in the IRA bombing of Frizzell’s fish shop on the Shankill Road, which is widely known as the Shankill Bombing.
In the years following, Alan became a leading voice in victims’ advocacy, peace building, and transitional justice. He has served as Centre Co-ordinator at the WAVE Trauma Centre (a cross-community victims and survivors organisation in Belfast) , sat on the board of Healing Through Remembering, and chaired its initiative to develop a Living Memorial Museum for The Troubles. From 2011 onward he also served as a Commissioner with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, focusing especially on issues surrounding dealing with past trauma and justice.
Over time, he has become a symbol of resilience, someone who refuses to let violence and loss define only pain, but seeks healing, memory, and transformation. More recently, after decades in the field, he announced his retirement from WAVE, reflecting on the costs and the calling of such work.

The final Operation Kenova report also found there do not appear to be “any realistic opportunities” for a fresh investigation into the atrocities.
A review, known as Operation Denton and published as part of Kenova, examined a series of UVF attacks attributed to the so-called Glenanne gang.
No one has ever been convicted over the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, which killed 35 people including two unborn twins. The UVF admitted responsibility in 1993.
It remains the biggest loss of life on any single day of the Troubles. An estimated 300 people were also injured in the blasts.
The review said UVF Brigade Staff, based in the Shankill area of Belfast, planned, resourced and carried out the attacks.
It stated: “The UVF was independently capable of carrying out the attacks and possessed the necessary materials, knowledge and expertise without any support from the security forces.”
