LIThe Boys is set in a universe where superpowered individuals (referred to as "Supes") are recognized as heroes by the general public and work for Vought International, a powerful corporation that markets and monetizes them. Outside their heroic personas, most are corrupt, self serving, and recklessly cause collateral damage. The series primarily focuses on two groups: The Boys, CIA-sponsored black ops agents looking to bring down Vought and its corrupt superheroes, and The Seven, Vought's premier superhero team and the Boys' most powerful adversaries.
In the first season, after his girlfriend is accidentally killed by one of The Seven, led by the narcissistic and unstable Homelander (Antony Starr), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) is enlisted by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), who despises all superpowered beings, and joins the vigilante team known as The Boys. As a conflict ensues between the two groups, Annie January / Starlight (Erin Moriarty), a young and hopeful heroine, is forced to face the truth about the heroes she admires after she joins The Seven.

In the original comics, the character Hughie Campbell was intentionally drawn to look exactly like actor Simon Pegg. While Pegg was too old to play Hughie in the show, he ended up playing Hughie's father!
The show features several "gender-swapped" characters from the source material, including Stormfront, Victoria Neuman, and Madelyn Stillwell, all of whom were men in the comic books.
