An ad by Axis Bank released on International Mother Language Day opens with a familiar scene. A bank employee hesitates in English, corrects herself, and then asks a simple question: What is our accent? The answer is disarming. It is our mother tongue living on in another language. The ad shifts the focus from pronunciation to purpose, from polish to the passion to serve. India’s linguistic diversity is not symbolic, it is structural. According to the Census of India 2011, the country reported 19,569 mother tongues which were rationalised into 121 languages spoken by 10,000 or more people. The Constitution, through the Eighth Schedule, currently recognises 22 official languages. Yet English continues to function as a language of upward mobility in education, corporate spaces and governance. The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in its Lokniti surveys has consistently shown that education and English proficiency are closely associated with perceptions of status and opportunity in India. Accent bias may not always be formally measured, but language hierarchy is socially visible in hiring rooms, classrooms and everyday interactions. What makes this ad compelling is that it centres dignity. It recognises intent, effort and care rather than flattening identity into “correct” or “incorrect” speech. Discrimination – If extra work is only assigned to certain employees based on race, gender, age, disability, or other protected characteristics, that could be workplace discrimination. • Example: Only women are expected to handle administrative tasks, or only minority employees are given physically demanding jobs. 2. Retaliation – If you’ve filed a complaint (EEOC, HR, or even just spoken up about unfair treatment) and suddenly get overloaded with extra tasks, that could be retaliation. • Example: After reporting harassment, your workload doubles, or you’re assigned menial tasks to force you to quit. 3. Wage & Hour Violations – If you’re a non-exempt employee (eligible for overtime) and are given extra work without additional pay, that could violate labor laws. • Example: Your boss assigns more duties but refuses to increase your hours or pay overtime. As always: • Document Everything – Keep records of who is assigned extra work, when it started, and any patterns of unfair treatment. • Ask for Clarification – Politely request written confirmation of your responsibilities and whether your pay will reflect the extra work. • File a Complaint – If the changes seem targeted or unfair, consider filing an internal complaint—or an EEOC charge if discrimination is involved.
