All he wanted to do was drive his robot vacuum with a PS5 controller. Instead, he found a security flaw affecting over 7,000 vacuums across 24 countries. Sammy Azdoufal used an AI coding assistant to figure out how his DJI Romo vacuum talks to DJI’s cloud servers. It worked… a little too well. After controlling his own vacuum, he realized he could access data from others too, including live camera feeds, audio, and home maps!! (And general locations) He didn’t exploit it. He reported it to The Verge. They verified it by giving him a test unit’s serial number, confirmed the access, and then reported the issue to DJI. DJI said the problem was resolved, and later said it had been fixed. Azdoufal has said not everything was fully patched at the time. Kind of wild that a weekend experiment + AI assistant turned into a global privacy wake-up call 😂
