⚠️ People waste a ton of money abroad by making this 1️⃣ mistake… 🏦 After choosing the amount of cash you want and accepting the fee 🤑, the ATM always asks, “Do you want to take the currency conversion from the bank?” 🚫 Always say NO!! Your home bank will always give you the best market rate! 💵 There is also a mark-up fee involved. 👓 Read closely! Banks have different ways of asking this question. They will sometimes use double negatives and it seems like you’re refusing their currency conversion when you’re actually accepting it. ‼️So, make sure you attention to the phrasing of the question (we’ve been burned by this before). 🔥 Mistakes while traveling happen, but try to learn from them! 🧠 What’s the biggest travel mistake you’ve made? Learn this before you travel abroad👇🏻 When we first started traveling, I thought all ATMs were the same. Stick in your card, get your cash. Easy, right? Nope. I once took out €100, which should have equaled $106.50. Instead it cost me $122 - plus over $5 in fees. 🤦‍♀️ I not only used the wrong machine, I also fell for the conversion scam - which I’ve learned most travelers are unknowingly taken in by. Here’s how we pick ATMs now (and how not to fall for the conversion scam) 👇🏻 ✅ Bank ATMs only If you’re standing there wondering, “Is this machine safe?” just ask yourself: is it run by an actual bank? That’s all that matters. Doesn’t have to be attached to a branch - just look for the name of a real bank on the machine (like Santander for example). Those are the ones we trust. ❌ Independent ATMs = tourist traps Names like Euronet, Travelex, Cardpoint, YourCash. They’re private companies designed to make money off tourists. You’ll see them in airports, hotel lobbies, convenience stores, and tourist streets - but the fees and exchange rates are some of the worst you’ll find. ⚠️ Dynamic Currency Conversion = scam This one gets almost everyone once - and the operators count on it. The ATM asks if you want to be charged in your home currency. To escape, you have to press “Decline Conversion.” Feels wrong - but you’re only declining their conversion, not the withdrawal. If you hit “Accept,” you get a terrible exchange rate and lose 5–10% of your money or more instantly. Always decline. 💡 Pro Tip: Do a quick search before your trip. Google “major banks in Italy” or “big banks in Thailand” and make a list of 2–3. Then on the ground, type “bank ATM near me” into Google Maps. Use a currency conversion app to show you the real exchange rate so you’ll know when a machine is ripping you off. 🧳 Want to know exactly what we pack after 7 years of full-time travel? 🌍💳 Save this for your next trip! Always pay in the local currency when using your credit card abroad - not USD! 💵 When a foreign merchant offers to charge you in dollars, it sounds convenient, but it will actually cost you more. The merchant (not your bank) sets the exchange rate, and it is usually more than you’d pay otherwise. ❌ Your bank or card network almost always offers a better rate with local currency. 💴 So next time the card terminal asks - choose local currency. Your wallet will thank you. 💰

The first of many travel hack Thursdays to come - starting with keeping your currency conversions at the tip of your fingers by saving them as your lock screen! This saves so much time, energy, and data when you're on the road and trying to purchase something while abroad. Write out the most common denominations of money from the court your in, to your home currency (or find something on the internet that has done this for you) Screenshot it, save it as your lock screen, and BAM. Easy conversions at a glance, all without having to even unlock your device Save this for your next trip or share with someone you know is travelling soon to save them some time, and hopefully some money when they don't overpay that street vendor cause they suck at math 🤷🏽 #travelhack #currencyconversion #standaretopost @stanforcreators

You just landed in Europe. You are tired, jet lagged, and just want a little cash for coffee or tips. Then you see an ATM that looks convenient and official. That is where a lot of travelers lose money. Those flashy airport and city center ATMs are not run by banks. They are privately owned cash traps built to take advantage of exhausted travelers, with brutal fees and terrible exchange rates. Here’s the move. Walk past them. If you need cash, use real bank ATMs. The ones attached to actual banks. Your wallet will thank you. And here’s the bigger mistake most people never realize. Dynamic currency conversion. Anytime you pay or withdraw money, you will be asked the same question. Dollars or euros? If you choose dollars, the merchant controls the exchange rate. It is almost never in your favor. Always choose euros. Let your bank handle the conversion using mid market rates, the same rates banks use with each other. So remember this. Skip the sketchy ATMs. Choose euros, not dollars. Decline every shady conversion. Let your money go toward experiences, not hidden fees. Comment travel hacks and we will send you everything you need to plan a smarter trip to Europe. The Tour Guy is Europe’s most trusted and reliable tour operator, offering expertly guided, stress free experiences across the continent’s most iconic destinations.

Stop doing these things, start traveling more ⬇️ ✨Number one: stop using a debit card! Swap that debit card for a new credit card with a big welcome offer so you can earn a ton of points. ✨Number two: stop putting all of your spending on just one card. Once you’ve earned the welcome offer, open a new card and put your spending on that. Then rinse and repeat until you have a mountain of points. ✨Number three: stop cashing out your points with the bank. Instead, learn how to transfer your points and get a much higher value from them! ➡️Comment MAGIC and I’ll send you more info about how to travel the world for pennies on the dollar thanks to points and miles 🙌🏼 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 👋🏼 Hi, I’m Jenna. Using a debit card to make purchases abroad isn’t the best move. Credit cards usually have better fraud protection and many don’t charge foreign transaction fees. I always travel with a debit card but I only use it to pull out money from ATMs in the local currency — and my Charles Schwab Investor Checking card reimburses ATM fees worldwide, which is amazing for travel. Save this for your next international trip. #travel #traveltips #moneytips #atm #debitcard

📍 Save this for your next international trip—and share it with a friend who needs to know. 💸 International Travel Money Hack: Don’t Let Banks Eat Into Your Vacation Budget 🌍 Here’s what many travelers don’t realize: when the card machine asks if you’d like to pay in USD or the local currency, you should always choose the local currency. And if you really want to maximize your money? Use a credit card with no international transaction fees. Why this matters: • Banks add significant markups when you choose USD abroad • Dynamic currency conversion quietly chips away at your budget • You can lose 3–7% on every single transaction simply by selecting the wrong option For example: That $50 dinner? It becomes $57–$65 when you allow the merchant to convert it for you. As parents who travel often, we specifically chose a travel credit card with: • No foreign transaction fees • Points or miles for future trips • Strong fraud protection • Reliable international customer support It’s a simple switch that saves real money over time—money that’s better spent on experiences with your family, not bank fees. Always let your home bank handle the conversion. Always pay in local currency. Your vacation budget will thank you. Here’s how I’ve saved money on travel doing these 5 things: 1️⃣ Use travel rewards credit cards…I’ve booked flights, hotels and rental cars for free or low cost using points I have built up. Also, with my credit card I have been able to have my Global Entry fee reimbursed and transaction fees waived. 2️⃣ Order foreign currency ahead of time…With my bank, I order currency before my trip and my fees are waived. I choose to order ahead so once I get to my destination I am not compelled to withdraw cash seeing that the airport exchange rates and ATM fees are expensive. 3️⃣ Travel off season. My wedding anniversary is in November and we have travelled a lot during this off season time which meant lower fares and less crowds. 4️⃣ Pack a carry-on. Here are my reasons: save on baggage fees, travel light is just so much better than hauling it through the streets or up the stairs AND with flight cancellations/delays, I want my luggage with me at all times. 5️⃣ Instead of taking Bolt or Uber, walk or take public transportation. Save money and get your steps in! 💡What tips do you have to save money on travel? 👉🏼Don’t forget to save and share for travel planning. 💫Follow me @wanderingwahineworld for travel inspiration, information, itineraries and ideas to inspire you to book your ticket and pack your bag and feel free to save & share my content which balances culture, connection and community. 🙋🏻‍♀️Hi!
