1. Secure attachment isn’t the absence of anxiety. It’s learning to how to stay connected to yourself while anxiety shows up, instead of abandoning yourself to keep the relationship. 2. You don’t become secure alone. It develops through safe-enough relationships, repair, stability, consistency, and being met emotionally (sometimes in therapy first). 3. Boundaries are part of secure attachment. To be clear, these aren’t meant to be walls or ultimatums. They’re clear, compassionate limits that protect your emotional safety and can actually deepen emotional connection. 4. You don’t get security by being “easy.” You feel it when you’re feeling secure enough to be honest, responsive to yourself, and able to hold your own needs alongside another person’s in a relationship. 5. Repair matters. Secure attachment isn’t about never messing up. It’s about knowing how to come back, move through it with curiosity, care, and compassion, and stay present (and noticing if you’re getting overwhelmed, taking pauses/breaks/ what you need). 6. Security is a practice, not a final destination. Attachment is fluid and grows as you grow. It requires ongoing effort and care. Everyone talks about “secure attachment” like it’s a personality trait or a glow up you achieve once you “heal enough”. But for many, your system learned early that closeness wasn’t always safe. You may have adapted to become hyper-aware, self-sufficient, overly flexible, or emotionally guarded because that’s how you had to survive and stay connected. So when you try to “be secure” now, you’re working with survival patterns, attachment wounds, and even relational memories stored in the body. Secure attachment isn’t overriding all of this. Cut each tortilla into 4 triangles. 2. Roll each triangle into a cone shape and secure with a toothpick. 3. Bake at 200°C for 5 minutes until lightly golden and crisp. 4. Which baby has secure attachment: 1st or 2nd? The answer is 1st. While many people think attachment is about how much a baby cries when a parent leaves, researchers actually look at the reunion. Baby #1 (Secure): Shows “secure base” behavior. They may be distressed when mom leaves, but they seek her out immediately upon her return, are easily comforted, and quickly go back to exploring. Baby #2 (Avoidant): Appears “independent” or unfazed. They don’t cry much during separation and may actively ignore or avoid the parent during the reunion, focusing on toys instead. The “Independent” Myth: To the untrained eye, Baby 2 looks like a “chill” baby. However, heart rate monitors tell a different story. These infants often show high physiological stress (elevated heart rate and cortisol), just like the crying baby. Baby 2 has learned a defensive strategy. If a caregiver is consistently dismissive or intrusive, the baby learns to “mask” their distress to avoid further rejection. They aren’t naturally independent; they are practicing premature self-reliance because they’ve learned they cannot rely on their caregiver for emotional regulation. The above clip is a sample from the strange situation protocol, created by the attachment researcher Mary Ainsworth. It’s called the “Strange Situation” because the infant is placed in a controlled but unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar events that create mild, manageable stress. The infant is brought into a lab playroom they have never seen before. Even though it has toys, it is still psychologically “strange” because it is unfamiliar and there is a stranger present. This activates the attachment system, especially when the caregiver is gone.
