1️⃣ Making rushed decisions. They start a campaign or launch new ads, they get low or no results in the first couple days, they start panicking. Tweaking things in the account, turning ads off or even worse, pulling the plug on the entire campaign. Sometimes, if you just wait a few more days, that ad that you just turned off could become your biggest winner. Trust me, I’ve seen it hundreds of times. If a campaign is underperforming, it doesn’t mean you need to turn it off. It just means that you need to try more ad formats to find the one that will work. 2️⃣ This leads me to the second mistake - not testing enough. Gone are the days when you run 4-5 ads at a time and hope for the best. If you are starting a new campaign, you need at least 15 to 20 ads at first. Then you need to keep on adding 5-10 ads per month or fortnight, depending on your optimisation cycle. 3️⃣ ‘Testing’ ads that are way too similar to each other. The new ad algorithm needs the diversity of creatives. Having 20 ads that look exactly the same but have a different hook is not good enough. Most of the time, Meta treats it as basically the same ad and will pick one of them and put all the budget towards it. In one campaign, you should try all the different ad types and creatives. Call out a different audience, speak to different pain points, test very different ad formats and visuals. You need to give the algorithm enough variety to work with. 4️⃣ Stop testing when they find a couple of strong winners. Once you found a winning ad or two (or three), you MUST keep testing. Trust me, you winners will stop performing sooner or later, and you will go back to the panic mode of tweaking things in the account to try to revive the performance. You can easily avoid this by always testing new things in your account. 5️⃣ Relying on agencies too much. I know this sounds weird coming from an agency owner. But as a business owner, you absolutely have to have a basic understanding of how ads work and what stats to pay attention to. Otherwise, it is way to easy for someone to show you bullshit stats that have no relevance and make it look like your account is doing well. Even if it’s not.
