THThe Musician is an 18th-century clockwork automaton organ player which actually plays with individual finger movements. She also ‘breathes’ with a heaving chest. Created in 1774 by Swiss watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz, his son Henri-Louis, and Jean-Frédéric Leschot. It is part of a famous trio of androids including “The Writer” and “The Draughtsman” currently housed at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
This film was taken during a private tour booked to see all three automata demonstrated at close hand.

THBalancing a ball on a stick requires close concentration. Sticking out the tongue seems to help. This 140 year old automaton by Vichy of Paris bears a strong resemblance to Harry Styles according to my chief restorer @maria.start, who achieved a miracle repairing the cracked gesso on the face of this figure without disturbing the original paint.

JEThe Peacock Clock is one of the most famous masterpieces of decorative automaton art..
When activated, the peacock slowly opens its tail, the owl turns its head, the rooster crows — and time becomes a performance. The time is shown in a slot in the cap of the mushroom.
Today this is the only large 18th-century automaton that has come down to use altered and in functioning condition.
Created in London by James Cox in the 1770s and later acquired for Catherine the Great, this extraordinary automaton is not just a clock — it is a theatre of time.

POArchivists at the Library of Congress recently discovered a 127-year-old film reel that collected dust for decades—and they believe it depicts the first-ever robot in a film.
The 45-second artifact, “Gugusse And The Automaton,” was made by the pioneering French filmmaker Georges Méliès. The word for robot wasn’t invented until 20 years later, but real-world “automatons” had existed for centuries before then.
