GO❌ Slow backswing → jerky transition → over the top
So many amateurs drag the club back thinking it’s “controlled” 😅 but all it does is kill any natural momentum. Then at the top it feels like there’s nothing there, so you panic 😬 and yank it down with your arms. That’s when the trail shoulder tightens up, everything gets steep, and boom over the top every time 🚫⛳️
✅ Athletic backswing → float at the top → smooth transition
Good golfers load it with intent 💥 using their ribcage and body to create momentum going back. Then at the top there’s this subtle float like the club is just suspended for a split second ✨. That tiny moment is everything, it lets the downswing start naturally, stay shallow, and flow instead of forcing it 😮💨🔥

BRYour golf swing has no chance if you do this ⬆️
Use this drill to learn to rotate in your backswing rather than excessively swaying, reverse pivoting, under rotating, etc. Even if you don’t quite have the mobility to turn to 90° use what range of motion you do have to get as close as you comfortably can.

The reason this swing is a SIMPLE model for many is because it provides 2 horizontal components and just 1 vertical component
Most average golfers swing out to in on the golf ball, so having 2 horizontals and just 1 vertical is a good way to shift the path more from the inside

⏸️ Hideki Matsuyama’s signature backswing pause has gotten a lot shorter over the years. It’s almost nonexistent in this video from 2023
The process started in 2019, whe ln Hideki visited Dr. Kwon’s golf biomechanics lab in Texas. 👨🔬
Dr. Kwon’s data shows prolonged, intentional pauses at the top of the backswing can often cost golfers power.
When you make an active backswing, you’re stretching upward—creating an “unweighting” effect that slingshots the club faster on the way down. But with pause too long and you lose all that flow. The backswing and downswing disconnect. You’re basically starting from zero again, Kwon explained to me.
“I explained the issues with it, and obviously advised him against it,” Dr. Kwon said.
Hideki worked on shortening his transition and did speed training to force himself to move quicker back and through.
“I really don’t know how that pause got into my swing. I do know that the pause has gotten a lot shorter,” Matsuyama said at the time. “Now, I imagine a flow that cuts back and through.

AL“No slide, just rotate!”
Backswing sway = your hips (and often upper body) drifting laterally away from the target instead of rotating.
Result? Inconsistent contact, fat shots, timing chaos.
The main feel I teaching during my lessons…
Feel like your trail hip stays over your trail heel
Pressure stays inside the trail foot
Upper body turns around your spine, not sliding off it
If your head moves 3–4 inches off the ball… that’s sway, not turn.
Try these two simple drills at home without any clubs you help you feel the body rotation.
