UPCNN aired a segment featuring independent reporter Nick Shirley, whose viral video alleges widespread fraud at Minnesota childcare centers receiving state funds. During the interview, Shirley told viewers to “make up your own minds” and encouraged them to “fact check me.”
The network then attempted to do exactly that—live on air. CNN producers called several of the childcare businesses featured in Shirley’s reporting. Most did not answer. Only one picked up the phone and told CNN they were “a legitimate business” and denied any wrongdoing.
Shirley’s investigation focuses on centers—many Somali-run—receiving large sums of taxpayer money despite showing little evidence of children, staff, or daily operations. The claims come as federal DHS and FBI probes expand, building on prior state investigations that have already resulted in more than 80 indictments in related cases.
