My biggest mistake as a junior developer was grinding LeetCode 4 hours a day thinking I could fake my way into a good job.
I got interviews. I even passed some. But once I started working? My manager and coworkers sniffed me out immediately 😭
I could solve algorithm puzzles but I couldn’t actually build anything.
Until I realized I’d been learning wrong the whole time.

So here’s 3 weekend projects that actually developed my skills 10X faster and helped me land multiple 6-figure offers:
1️⃣ Build a URL shortener with analytics at scale
Everyone’s built a basic URL shortener—yours will handle millions of redirects. Design for read-heavy traffic with caching and async analytics processing, add rate limiting, then iterate toward 10K requests per second. You’ll understand why Bitly thinks deeply about database partitioning.
2️⃣ A self-updating developer portfolio
Create a site that pulls your latest GitHub commits and blog posts, then generates descriptions using AI. Wire up webhooks to trigger rebuilds and deploy with CI/CD. You’ll learn API integrations and automation while building something you’ll actually use to land the job.
3️⃣ A “coffee chat” scheduler
Add a Calendly-style booking system to your portfolio site with Google Calendar integration, confirmation emails, and a pre-chat questionnaire. Recruiters can book time in one click—you’ll get more conversations and learn calendar APIs.
