Here are 5 things I wish I knew before becoming a civil engineer: 1. Practice, practice, practice.
Don’t just read and memorize formulas. Solve problems. When I was in my first year of engineering, I made that mistake. I thought I could just read, memorize, and ace the exam. But I failed again and again especially in math. It’s not enough to study reviewers or memorize solution steps. You need to write, calculate, and solve problems yourself. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll be during exams because you’ll have built your own mental toolbox. 2. Focus on subjects that actually matter in the field.
Not everything you study will be directly useful at work, but some subjects definitely will be. In my experience, Estimating/Design, Project Management and Drafting Software are crucial. Knowing these early gives you a huge advantage when you start working on real projects. 3. Join college clubs and organizations.
Technical skills are important, but communication and leadership matter just as much. Join orgs or student chapters. You’ll learn how to lead, present, and collaborate which are the skills you’ll use every single day in the real world. 4. Take internships seriously.
Internships give you a glimpse of what civil engineering is really like. You’ll see which specialization fits you best whether it’s structural, transportation, water resources, construction, or geotechnical. It’s also where you’ll meet mentors and build connections that can help your career later. 5. Don’t forget to enjoy college.
It’s easy to think, “I just want to graduate and make money.” But college isn’t just about that. It’s the best time to make friends, explore, and grow as a person. After graduation, everyone gets busy and priorities change. So enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
