This male cuttlefish has spotted a female behind me, and is signalling for her to follow him to his den by turning his skin purple. She accepted the invitation and mated together there! . . . . . Have you ever seen what happens when multiple Australian Giant Cuttlefish are in proximity together….. THIS!!! I was lucky enough to see two together this week. Using cells called chromatophores these beauties can put on colourful displays that rival Sydney’s Vivid light show. If I hadn’t put music to this video clip you would hear me say the largest “wow” underwater…. I can’t wait to see even more of when their breeding season officially starts in May….never been so excited for winter 💙. The undulating black stripes confuse prey, making the creatures all but invisible to crabs and other victims, researchers report today in Science Advances.
