When you meet someone for the first time, your brain goes into “risk management” mode. You’re subconsciously scanning: Is this person safe? Do they judge? Do they have power over me? Because first impressions matter socially, most people present a filtered version of themselves — polite, agreeable, toned down. It’s not fake, it’s protective.
As trust builds over time, the brain slowly lowers its guard. Once someone feels emotionally safe, accepted, and predictable, personality traits that were hidden start coming out — humor, weird habits, strong opinions, vulnerability. That’s why friendships feel deeper than first impressions. You’re not meeting a new person; you’re meeting the unlocked version.
