SMArthel Lane “Doc” Watson (1923-2012) was born 100 years ago today in Deep Gap, North Carolina. Here he performs his arrangement of “Deep River Blues.”
By the time Doc was “discovered” by folklorists Ralph Rinzler and Eugene Earle in the late summer of 1960, he was already a proficient guitarist with a local reputation. Through Rinzler and Earle’s efforts, Doc was brought onto the folk music circuit of coffee houses, colleges, and festivals. He would go on to become one of America’s premier acoustic guitarists, performing at the White House for President Jimmy Carter, and earning eight Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.

THHappy 100th Birthday to the incomparable Doc Watson! Our very own John Bryan (of Boone, NC) is actually from the Watson lineage - John’s “Paw” Willard Watson and Doc were first cousins and played a lot of music together. His Paw and Maw Watson were also featured throughout the Doc & Rosa Lee documentary and also had living exhibits at the Smithsonian.
In honor of Doc’s birthday, here’s John playing the mountain claw hammer style banjo he learned from his Watson family on “I’ll Fly Away” - the final song Doc recorded.
