Apologies - our last post was a bit confusing. The octopus featured in this video is Grimpoteuthis, the official octopus nicknamed “Dumbo.” Our last post showed a member of the genus Cirrothauma, and while it is a cirrate octopod with flapping fins, it is *not* Grimpoteuthis. This fine specimen here was seen on #SEPacificSeamounts Dive 640 on Seamount SFX, within the Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park. This is a significant range extension for this type of octopus. See the full encounter via link in bio. Dumbo octopuses are famous for the large fins (not ears, from which they get their nickname) on their mantle, used to gracefully “flap” through the water as they swim. More info about them via @marinebio.conservation.society: “They feed on worms, bivalves, copepods and crustaceans. Each sucker has a pair of cirri (a slender tendril or hairlike filament), which are thought to have some role in feeding, perhaps by creating currents of water that help bring food closer to their mouth or beak. The eggs of this family are very large, and covered with a tough casing which is secreted by the oviducal gland and hardens in seawater. Eggs are individually laid directly on the ocean floor, on the undersides of rocks or shells. The ovaries of these octopuses contain eggs at different stages, implying that they breed continually instead of having a distinct breeding season.”

Science Update: After consulting cephalopod expert Michael Vecchione, we now believe this individual octopus to be in the Cirroteuthidae family (probably Cirrothauma). There's still so much to learn about the animals of the deep sea and every sighting contributes to our growing knowledge bank! Spotted: a dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis genus)! Our Corps ofExploration came across this #cephalopod while exploring the abyssal plain in the waters of the #CookIslands, over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) deep. Watch until the end and you’ll be treated to a gorgeous look at the underside of this octopus, including the rows of suckers on its eight tentacles. Each tentacle is connected by a web of skin, allowing for the graceful pulsing umbrella movement we were lucky enough to catch on camera of ROV Little Hercules. While #dumbooctopus’ tentacles lack spines like those of some other #octopus species, they do have cirri —strand-like structures on each tentacle that help them locate food and sense their environment.

Is this the underwater Halloween costume winner? 😍 But seriously, how cool does this Dumbo Octopus look? “This clip from ROV SuBastian shows a great example of how Dumbo Octopuses use the flapping their strong fins to propel themselves through the water, as opposed to the jet propulsion (expelling water forcefully from their siphons) as other octopuses do. Another noticeable difference is that the Dumbo octopus doesn’t have an ink sack, since it rarely encounters predators in the deep sea.” - 📷 @schmidtocean
