I’ve been planning a complete rebrand for months now, and whilst that might not sound like a big deal in the grand scheme of things to many people it’s a HUGE thing for me. I’ve been creating under the name tobyandroo for over a decade. And I’ve outgrown it.
I planned my week break to change everything over and what happened when I tried to change my username was a message that said “please contact support” - cool, I can get with that… but apparently, I can’t; because support doesn’t exist. 🤷🏻♀️
In the last two weeks I’ve spoken to people who have had to delete accounts they have had for years because they can’t change their deadname, can’t rebrand their businesses, can’t do a thing unlesssssss they are very wealthy (I remember a brand I worked with once had direct access to reps at insta because they spent £50K+ per ad campaign) or they are deemed worthy.
Why does it matter? Because it’s most likely to impact creators who are activists, small business owners, writers and more. Creators generate *billions* in revenue for this app, they have a supposed branch called @creators because we matter so much to them… but we aren’t important enough to support when accounts need or want changes. And yes, it matters in the real world too because people build businesses on social media, they use it to generate revenue and live.
So, if anyone has any contacts for @instagram @meta let them know this is a problem and see if we can make some changes here. It shouldn’t be based on your wealth or your clout (and as an FYI, you can’t even ask them to remove the verification, you’re just… stuck.)
Lastly, it reeeeeeally opens up people to being scammed: I’ve read countless Reddit threads with people offering their “service” for a 5 figure fee because they have “access” to instagram. Just make it make sense!
