Showing soon at LI-MA Presents: New Art on Screen, next Wednesday 6 March 19.30 at LAB111 – ‘Let’s Be Friends’ (2022) by Arno Coenen & Rodger Werkhoven. This evening of screenings and artist Q&As is also the Amsterdam premiere of ‘Let’s Be Friends’, following screenings worldwide. Arguably the world’s first-ever AI-generated animated short film, ‘Let’s Be Friends’ presents synthetic actors talk about ‘AI-acting’, anticipating early on many artists’ fears of losing their artistic exclusivity because of emerging AI technology. Synthetic actors – generated with DALL•E 2 – explain the differences between ‘traditional’ 3D-animated characters and them, AI-generated actors, as well as how artificial intelligence will affect acting careers in general soon. Some of the characters already appeared in Coenen’s earlier work, settling the record for being the world’s first-ever talking AI-generated characters. In just a few seconds, OpenAI’s DALL•E 2 generated all the synthetic actors from a random set of pixel-noise just by resorting to its machine-learning model, following Arno’s and Rodger’s art direction in natural language. However, DALL•E 2 is not capable of generating animation. Therefore, Werkhoven and Coenen resorted to an AI built by D-ID. That AI generated all the movement and voices needed for the many minutes of lip-sync synthetic chit-chat, which also takes just a couple of seconds to generate. Except for the ‘after effects’, everything else in this work has been exclusively achieved by AI. Save the date! Friday 29 March and Saturday April 6 award-winning film "La Casa Lobo" (The Wolf House) by León & Cociña will be screened at @lab_111 in a special program curated by @wanderwelle. Surreal, unsettling, and finally haunting, La Casa Lobo is a stunning outpouring of creativity whose striking visuals queasily complement its disturbing story. After escaping from a religious colony in Chile, Maria seeks shelter in a mansion where she’s taken in by two pigs, its only inhabitants. Like in a stop-motion dream, the universe of the house reacts to her feelings. The animals slowly morph into humans and the house into a dark, menacing world. The film was shot in several studios and exhibitions at museums of different cities from Latin America and Europe including Upstream Gallery, the Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany and the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile. The world premiere of the film was at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival in the Forum section in 2018.
