Punch-kun, now seven months old at Ichikawa City Zoo in Chiba, was recently introduced to a brand-new stuffed orangutan toy.
The new toy was placed right beside him, within easy reach.
He noticed it.
He looked at it carefully.
But he didn’t pick it up.
Instead, he held onto the older one — the worn, familiar toy he’s been attached to.
While Punch-kun is slowly spending more time near the group and showing signs of social adjustment, he’s still choosing comfort in what feels safe.
Shortly after, an adult macaque moved closer and began gentle grooming near him — another small but positive step in his integration.
The new toy remained untouched.
It may seem like a small detail, but moments like these often reflect how young macaques adapt at their own pace.
