The story behind Hooverette dresses! These iconic mid-20th century wraps evolved from a specific political moment during World War I. Hooverettes were women that politician and future President Herbert Hoover recruited to teach food conservation during WWI. These women were given patterns for this housedress which was eminently practical—stylish, washable, and complete with pockets. The dresses continued to be popular with women for decades. Today, however, we associate Hoover's name generally with Hoovervilles—the homeless encampments that emerged during the Great Depression, which started at the beginning of Hoover's presidency. Real Clothes, Real Lives, organized by @smithcollegehistoricclothing, is only on view until June 22! Visit soon to see it. W. “Billy” Bitzer of the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company for viewing at the Westinghouse Auditorium at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Happy birthday, Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (1913–2005)! Born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, Parks grew up in the segregated South, where she experienced racial discrimination and violence from an early age. Her commitment to justice began young and shaped her into a leader and organizer in the fight for civil rights. Parks is often remembered for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955. However, by then, she was already a respected activist and secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true,” Parks said. “I was not tired physically... The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” Parks’s refusal to move from her seat on the bus on Dec 1, 1955 set in motion the Montgomery Bus Boycott. In the aftermath of her act of courage, she was jailed for refusing to give up her seat and lost her job for participating in the boycott. Parks and her husband, Raymond, subsequently relocated to Hampton, Virginia, and later permanently settled in Detroit, Michigan. She continued to be an active member in the Civil Rights Movement and played a vital role in organizing Detroit’s Civil Rights Movement. She supported the movement both financially and physically until her death. At the age of 92, Parks passed away, leaving a rich legacy of resistance against racial discrimination and injustice that has made the world a better place for future generations. 🎞️: @bbc_archive, @adams.delights, @jadaimani510, democracy now. “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true. I was not tired physically, or no more tired than I usually was at the end of a working day. I was not old, although some people have an image of me as being old then. I was forty-two. No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” -Rosa Parks On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Instead of going to the back of the bus, which was designated for African Americans, she sat in the front. When the bus started to fill up with white passengers, the bus driver asked Parks to move. She refused. Her resistance set in motion one of the largest social movements in history, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Today we honor the enduring legacy of Rosa Parks, born on February 4th, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Growing up in the segregated South, Parks was frequently confronted with racial discrimination and violence. She became active in the Civil Rights Movement at a young age and leaves behind a rich legacy of resistance against racial discrimination and injustice. The stomping ground for sailors, shopgirls, gangs, gays, and the immigrant Irish, Italians, Chinese, Jews, and Germans, it later became America’s iconic skid row, but rebounded in the late 20th century, impacting the emergence of Abstract Expressionism, free jazz and punk rock.
