Wanting space, rest, or boundaries feels “selfish.” She was taught that her needs inconvenienced her mother.
4. She questions her own reality
Her experiences were minimized, denied, or rewritten. She learned to trust her mother’s version of events over her own memory.
5. She either overachieves or self-sabotages
Success threatens her mother’s control; failure confirms the shame she was given. So she oscillates between proving herself and disappearing.
6. She fears abandonment yet feels smothered
Closeness feels unsafe, distance feels terrifying. Love was invasive, enmeshed, and unpredictable.
7. She carries a deep, quiet shame
Not loud insecurity—existential shame. A belief that something is fundamentally wrong with her.
A narcissistic mother doesn’t nurture a daughter’s identity—she competes with it, consumes it, or controls it.
Many women don’t realize the abuse until adulthood, when they finally try to become themselves and feel overwhelming fear or guilt for doing so.
And I know I’m a man, but I’ve been a victim of narcissistic abuse, too. None of us deserve what we got.
