The pressure causes the cell membrane to rupture.⁠ ⁠ When it breaks, it can be seen how the endoplasm, as well as the macronucleus and some vacuoles spread through the medium outside the cell itself.⁠ ⁠ The two large spheres seen inside the cell are contractile vacuoles. ⁠ ⁠ The video was sped up by about 6x.⁠ ⁠ It is not a case of apoptosis. These are the most amazing, most incredible colonial rotifers I have EvEr seen. I’m currently vacationing on the coast (NC) and was gifted some ditch water from across the road from the house we are in (thanks, @hyker_man). The sample was LOADED with these tiny little balls I assumed were peritrichs…except they were uniform in size. I finally scooped one up and got lost for over an hour. Then again the next day…twice. I’m in loooooove 😍 Note: there is one large, gelatinous rotifer in each colony! I bet that thing is head of household. Genus Sinantherina **Thanks to @mundaymicroscope for the darkfield filter. It made these rotifers even more gorgeous!

Rotifers are multicellular organisms, ranging from 50 micrometers to a few millimeters. There are over 2,000 known species that come in all shapes and sizes. Rotifers have the ability to endure extreme conditions through a process called cryptobiosis. When faced with desiccation or freezing, they enter a state of suspended animation. In this dormant state, metabolic activity grinds to a halt, and the organism forms a protective structure known as a tun, shielding it from environmental stressors. These tuns, resembling tiny time capsules, can remain viable for thousands of years.
