NS has been the cornerstone of Singapore's defence and security since its independence.Under the Enlistment Act, all male Singapore citizens and permanent residents 18 years or older, unless exempted, are required to serve National Service (NS) for 2 years. Following the completion of full-time NS, they will become Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen).NS defaulters are punishable with a fine of up to $10, 000 and/or a term of imprisonment up to 3 years.NS can be served in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) or Singapore Police Force (SPF).
Thus promoting defence and patriotism from a young age and moulding young adults into men making it a right of passage for men.
